Dr Seuss
First published in the fifties and sixties and still going strong. Children love the rhythm and rhyme and the witty illustrations and stories. For reading aloud to younger children aged about 2 or 3 upwards; by the age of 6 or 7 they'll love reading him on their own. These are good books for the transition to independent reading. ("Dr Seuss" and "Theo LeSieg" were pseudonyms of Theodor Seuss Geisel, b. 1904, d. 1991). Published by Random House and apparently not available in paperback.
